Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, in her capacity as the UN Secretary-General's Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development (UNSGSA), praised the innovation introduced by PT Bank Tabungan Negara (Persero) Tbk (BTN) through the program “Pay Your Mortgage with Your Waste”. The initiative allows households to convert sorted waste into savings to reduce monthly mortgage installments, supporting green financial inclusion and national waste reduction efforts.
Queen Máxima delivered her appreciation during a visit to the BTN housing area at Gran Harmoni Cibitung, Bekasi, on Wednesday (26/11/2025). She emphasized that simple innovations can create meaningful impact for low-income families and the environment. The program has been implemented in several areas, and BTN aims to expand it to 100 locations across Java by 2026, in line with Indonesia's green economic agenda.
BTN President Director, Nixon LP Napitupulu, noted that household waste can be converted into savings that reduce monthly mortgage obligations by 10–15%. BTN is also developing a long-term roadmap for financing low-emission housing, targeting 150,000 low-emission housing units by 2029. During her visit, Queen Máxima also observed low-emission subsidized homes, engaged with beneficiaries, and witnessed a mass signing of subsidized mortgage agreements involving workers from both formal and informal sectors.
BTN's Director of Risk Management, Setiyo Wibowo, highlighted the importance of financial health and emergency savings for mortgage borrowers. BTN continues to strengthen financial literacy initiatives, including autodebit savings products and waste-to-savings programs. Meanwhile, BTN's Director of Consumer Banking, Hirwandi Gafar, stated that Queen Máxima's visit reflects growing global attention to sustainable housing finance in Indonesia and encourages BTN to further advance financial education for the public
