The BTN Jakarta International Marathon (BTN JAKIM) 2026 did not just captivate tens of thousands of running enthusiasts from home and abroad—it set an inspiring new benchmark for environmental action. Awarded the prestigious World Athletics Elite Label, the marathon drew over 45,000 runners and successfully managed nearly 7 tons of waste with a remarkable 100 percent recovery rate.
Held on June 13–14, 2026, across Jakarta’s iconic landmarks—stretching from the National Monument (Monas) to the finish line at Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Main Stadium—the annual mega-event co-hosted by PT Bank Tabungan Negara (Persero) Tbk (BTN) and the Jakarta Provincial Government proved that major sports spectacles can champion sustainability.
Through the BTN ESG initiative in partnership with waste management expert Rekosistem, no waste from participants or spectators was left to overflow or burden landfills like TPST Bantar Gebang. Out of the total 6,970 kilograms of waste collected across two pick-ups, every bit was sorted and funneled into circular recycling and eco-friendly processing channels. The collected waste comprised 74.04 percent managed residue, 15.58 percent PET plastic bottles, and 7.11 percent cardboard and paper packaging.
This tangible eco-action delivered an immediate ecological payoff. Over the two-day event, integrated waste management prevented approximately 2.39 tons of carbon emissions (CO2e) from entering the atmosphere. Put into everyday context, this carbon reduction is equivalent to:
- Growing 40 tree seedlings over a 10-year period.
- Avoiding a road trip of more than 9,500 kilometers by car.
- Saving 1,020 liters of gasoline, or averting the burning of 1.19 tons of coal.
The sustainability momentum buzzed with energy at the interactive activation and educational hub inside the GBK complex. Runners and visitors enthusiastically took part in hands-on waste sorting. Simply by turning in used plastic bottles, participants unlocked exclusive perks—including free personalized medal engraving with their name and finish time, keepsake photobooth experiences, and upcycling workshops to craft custom cardholders. Through these creative activations, hundreds of plastic bottles were diverted from the waste stream and sent directly for recycling.
The active presence of ESG Volunteers alongside clearly color-coded sorting bins (organic, inorganic, and recyclable) positioned across the race route made responsible waste disposal seamless for everyone. With this standout success, BTN JAKIM 2026 not only solidifies Jakarta’s standing as a premier global sport tourism hub, but also establishes a gold standard for hosting large-scale sports events that are clean, green, and committed to the planet’s future.
